The Housing Crisis in India

India is currently facing a housing crisis as millions of people become homeless or live in slums. aThe main demographic facing the housing shortage is from the lower socioeconomic class. They live in houses of poor conditions because they are unable to afford rent or housing prices.  The figure is estimated to be 20 million from a 2011 census. 

What are the causes behind this housing crisis? Many residents in New Delhi are facing this crisis due to disasters like floods. Others have been deceived by fraudulent property dealers who sold them unauthorised land. As a result, the government demolished these unauthorised homes. Due to expensive medical care, some lack the means to rent a home and live outside hospitals. Consequently, many families are displaced without “basic amenities, safety and privacy”.
