I opened the intimidating book filled with what looked like a foreign language and I groaned painfully. It wasn’t a pleasant sight but I understood its purpose. I read and I was already feeling drowsy. Reading can be extremely dull, especially when you’re forced to read it on your birthday. Anyways, for children with low grades and angry parents, I had no other option. My speaking stuttered and my throat cluttered occasionally. It wasn’t going well. I picked up the book and slid a cute bookmark in before pointing my chubby finger at the stuffed Yoshi.

“Al…ways end your sen-ten-ces with a full stop.”
Years passed, my routine never changed. Courage is what I needed. My parents were almost giving up. I battled myself hard and I ended up taking a book off my dad’s shelf. I read and studied. Grades flew up like a plane taking off. I held my joy in. My conversations with my toys became more vibrant and intriguing.
“Instead of big, use the more sophisticated words like gigantic.” I urged Yoshi’s friend, Yishak.
“A simile uses ‘like’ or ‘as’, whereas a metaphor says one thing is another.”
Everyday I would share little new bits of wisdom with my furry plushies. It was surreal to see my parents flooding with joy and tears as they handed my test paper back. I succeeded!! My parents signed me up for multiple classes and I studied hard. It was a wave of joy and pride.
Eventually, I battled everything and I made it to my dream job as an English university professor. It was what I always played when young. We pretended to be teachers teaching plushies and now it was real.
“Good morning class, English may be daunting at first but it is incredibly powerful… What began as an arduous task has evolved into a source of pleasure. Reading has become the friend i never expected.”
