Fallen

PROMPT: Write a narrative piece which informs the reader of the importance of environmental conservation. You may choose to write the story from the point of view of a vulnerable species or someone who has witnessed first hand the destruction of the environment by human processes such as mining or deforestation. Your text will be judged on the use of literary techniques, presence of a complication, and good vocabulary. 

‘CRASH!’ 

The silvery machine bursts through the forest, throwing our eucalyptus tree along with our precious nests to the ground. I flap my small wings, which have been clipped by the falling, hazardous branches, but they hang limply by my sides.

‘Mum, what is happening?’ 

‘Don’t worry son, it will be all okay.’ She hides me under her wing but I could hear her heart thumping out of fear. We were trapped. Her once vibrant plumage, adorned with hues of azure and emerald, now appears dull and disheveled, bearing the scars of countless battles waged against the elements.

I remember that just a few months ago, it was a lush and vibrant paradise where our feathered friends roam and plants thrive, dancing in the wind. Until the rise of a two -legged species which terrorised the earth, stealing life out of its land and animals. Humans rose, taking everything. Humans scour the land devouring anything in its path and turning them into smithereens, leaving us with a grey desolate wasteland.

No matter how hard we try, nothing will work. We slowly crawl and crawl to the end of no return. We have lost hope. Though there are millions of good people in this world who strive to save this planet there are still even more people who destroy this planet more. They cut down trees, they litter, they kill animals. Humanity has taken a deep and dark turn from its humble origins.

Overconsumption, greediness and cruelty has washed over us. Our efforts to change this planet must take a serious turn! A turn to revive the fallen souls of the rest of our planet. For in the darkest of nights, amidst the deepest of shadows, lies the promise of a new beginning—a chance to rise from the ashes and soar once more, against all odds.
