How to Survive A Lion Attack

Updated: May 12, 2023

Lions are majestic and fierce creatures that roam freely in the savannahs of the African Open Safari Zoo. As curious and inquisitive visitors, you might be tempted to snap their photos up close. However, there are important safety precautions and measures for a smart visitor to prevent an exciting trip escalating into a deadly tragedy.

Handling Lion Encounters in the Wilderness

Lions adore open plains with bountiful shade. Unless you want to intrude their space, it is best to reside within caves or dense jungles. If you have an open wound, cover the delicious scent of blood from the lions. If you find yourself in the unfortunate claws of a lion, follow the list of instructions below.

  1. You must remember to stay calm by taking in slow deep breaths and do not panic. Sudden movements can prompt the lion to attack.

  2. Stand upright to show the lion your courage and strength. If you cower, the lion will prey on your vulnerability and weakness.

  3. Slowly retreat whilst maintaining constant eye contact with the lion. If you turn around to sprint away, the lion will pursue and outrun you. When there is sufficient distance between you and the lion, retreat but be prepared for surprises. If the lion pounces, shout at the top of your lungs to frighten the beast.

  4. When you find safe shelter, contact staff at the zoo on 0413000177 to send help. Contacting our experts will ensure that other visitors can also enjoy the natural beauties freely.

De-escalating an Angry Lion Attack

If one of our hungry lions demonstrates aggression in the form of growling towards you, follow the tips below.

  1. Stay standing upright to maintain a full view of the lion. This ensures that you can jump readily to defend yourself if its legs start to move towards you.

  2. If the lion pounces on you, use your fists to aim for the face and head of the lion. This may stun the lion and prevent the situation from exacerbating.

  3. Attempt to jump on top of the lion where you cannot be bitten and can gain more control and balance.

  4. Immediately after the attack seek help from a medical practitioner to cover your wounds and check for any concussions. It is best to get psychological help given that the traumatising experience may leave long term fears.

We hope the instructions have helped you understand exactly what to do if a lion strikes so you can enjoy your experience at the Botswana Open Safari Zoo safely.
