Left in the Cold

ree

I was left in the harsh cold by my heartless parents. My mother abandoned me without any hesitation, chucking my small, frail body near the banks of the cold river. Not long after, she gave birth to a child with pink, rosy cheeks called Persephone. She grew up to become the Goddess of Spring. She became a symbol of rebirth and rejuvenation. Meanwhile, I hid away from society to grow alone amongst the crystalline branches. I grew an icy heart and my powers froze the farmers' crops. I froze the rivers, made the land unliveable and my wintry powers sent the animals off on their journeys. How could the world be so unfair?

On an evening stroll through the woods, I found my heartless mother and Persephone smiling from ear to ear about Persephone’s journey to the underworld. Immediately, I saw the opportunity. Out of hate, envy and anger, I destroyed the plants and lush crops Persephone spent her dear time and youth on. The forest woods turned to a monochrome palette, and the icy winds scared away all the chirping birds.

When Persephone came back, she was in utter shock. I had met a strong man named Boreas who was the God of the North Winds. Together, we blew off the luscious covering of the forest canopies. Persephone weeped at the coldness of the land. She desperately searched through the forest floors and canopies to figure out who it was. It was none other than me, Despina, who had done this. Eventually, she caught onto the fact that it was me. We were polar opposites in nature. She made blossoms and flowers. She turned trees bright green. I bleached the blossoms. I killed the trees. I was nothing like her.

She found me sitting in the coldest corner of the forest. To my surprise, she took me into her arms.

"My sister," She spoke warmly and smiled.

"Sister," I whispered back. My heart felt a little less icy.
