A girl named Jess returning back to Australia

Another girl leaving her parents to pursue a brighter future

  2. Theme / Main idea/ Mood

Freedom of being in charge of one’s destiny

    Bittersweet tone

  3. Example 1 - simile

‘Began to feel like a guest overstayed her welcome and was being tolerated by a well mannered host’

  4. Example 2  - visual imagery of the girl’s farewell

Change is a bittersweet necessity to life

‘A quick wave, flashed them a quick smile, and didn’t look back’

Wave and smile create a sense of excitement, but the words ‘quick’ and ‘didn’t look back’ reveals difficulty of change as well

Showcases how change can bring new freedoms and destinies

  6. Overall, change is a necessity in life which creates new excitement and freedoms, with Morton’s characters welcoming new changes eagerly.

Prompt: Exciting Change

Write a short story whereby the main character in your text undergoes an exciting change in their life or creates exciting change. Like Kate Morton’s prose fiction, use figurative language, emotive language and visual imagery to convey how change is exciting and necessary.
