How to Be a Sustainable Citizen

Updated: May 12, 2023

With Mother Earth perishing, the preservation of natural and physical resources is urgent. Therefore, taking action to become a sustainable citizen is absolutely vital to protecting the fantastic flora and fauna present. As CEO of Planet Earth Operations for over five years, our mission is to educate the simple steps to inspire sustainable citizens.

Firstly, purchase reusable objects as opposed to single use items to decrease landfill waste. A miscellaneous variety of items such as bags, containers, boxes and most items can be re-utilised and repurposed. Immediate disposal of single use materials into landfill to be burnt and release significant quantities of toxic gases into the air. Excess landfill is detrimental to the environment, leading to pollution and destroying ecosystems.

Secondly, there is an abundance of recyclable objects so they can be repurposed. These include paper, cardboard, cartons, bottles and car parts. Subsequently, these materials can be transported to material recovery facilities where they are sorted, bundled, shredded and washed. Afterwards, they get melted independently and reorganised to form a new product. Hence, correct sorting prevents the accumulation of landfill, and allows precious resources to be protected. If you see rubbish on the streets, pick it up so it doesn’t get swept away into bushes or the ocean. No matter big or small, pick up rubbish wherever and whenever as even a small difference counts!

Thirdly, only shop when you need to! Buying unnecessary items is a large threat as it increases waste production. By becoming more meticulous and minimalistic with your purchases, there is a smaller likelihood of you having to throw away your possessions in the future. By following the mindset of quality over quantity, you save money and protect the environment at the same time.

Once you have followed the steps, you would have understood how to be a sustainable person! Take action and become a pioneer in the green thumbs movement in your local community to inspire more eco-friendly action now.
