PROMPT: Is pollution a necessary evil?
Many cities suffer from excessive land, water or air pollution. Today, you are going to write a Letter to the Editor of a newspaper. In the letter give your opinion on whether pollution is a necessary evil for our society.
Dear city council,
As a concerned young citizen, the pollution in our city has gotten out of hand taking over our streets and waterways! Is pollution a necessary evil to achieve a convenient lifestyle? In my opinion, it is preposterous that our current and future generations must live in these horrible conditions! The damage caused by pollution is not worth it.
Recently, studies have shown that over 78% of our waterways are polluted which can cause blockages and even floods! Our city has also been found to have less than 1000 bins on our streets, parks and alleyways! This has caused severe littering around causing an overload of waste in canals, pipes, roads and worst of all, our water system. The effects of pollution will be felt by those who are yet unborn. Let’s closely monitor the pollutants and develop cleaner solutions for our everyday waste.
One other issue which occurs almost everywhere is the garbage workers being careless and throwing things around like they are toys! They do not care about their jobs or our city! They should be fired and taken care of immediately! These contaminants wash up on beaches or rivers, having a detrimental impact on our health and poison animal life. With greater awareness of recycling methods, it is feasible to reinforce more positive behaviours and change our actions.
Lastly is the abundance of industrial buildings scattered everywhere! Is breathing carbon dioxide a new trend or is oxygen just not good enough? Seriously, it is insane for a living being to be breathing toxic chemicals! Especially children! It is possible for government organisations to take initiative in scrutinising these companies and reducing greenhouse emissions.
In my view, we need to look at lifestyle and attitudes, and change these to make sure the environment will be around much after we will be. Nowadays, we are much more aware of recycling methods and regulating pollution, we just need the determination to put these into practice or we lose the planet we take for granted.
