No More Plastic Bags

Dear Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of Australia,

I am Leon, a concerned year 5 student in Canberra. I am writing on behalf of my local community and Mother Earth to raise an important complaint about too many people using plastic bags and recklessly chucking them away after single use. We need to ban single use plastic bags. If you care about this nation's amazing flora and fauna, you need to act fast before more repercussions follow and destroy our beautiful planet. As single-use plastic bags end up in landfill, they stay there for thousands of years replacing gorgeous greenery with horrific poisons. Many people do not even put the plastic bags in waste, carelessly letting it pollute land, oceans and rivers. Unfortunately, many plastic bags end up as weapons killing adorable animals.

Firstly, many people will chuck out the plastic bag shortly after buying one from the shops. While the plastic bag is used for only half an hour, its production exhausts the finite resources on Earth. It would end up in landfill to be burnt, or for thousands of years polluting the precious soil and organisms in it. For an item with incredibly limited use, it causes endless problems. The dirtiness and the chemicals of the bag pollutes the soil, making crops, trees and grass grown on the land by farmers poisonous and inedible for thousands of years. Wouldn’t you rather sacrifice a moment of convenience to maintain our sustainable and hospitable environment, and prevent intoxicating innocent lives?

In addition, if plastic bags are not disposed of properly, plastic bags will end up killing lots of wonderful wildlife. I see as many people as the number of stars in the night sky just chucking out plastic bags and not worrying about the consequences. The wind will blow these deadly weapons into the ocean, or a park, or forests, where amazing animals might try to eat it thinking it was a scrumptious meal. Regrettable, this will result in death due to choking. Scientific research demonstrates that thousands of animal deaths are due to thoughtless disposal of plastic bags. We must rectify this catastrophe now.

Furthermore, the switch to reusable bags creates opportunities for a more sustainable country. When millions of people in this country are encouraged to make the change from plastic to reusable bags, this can inspire more eco-friendly action. By starting a campaign against plastic bags and how they kill animals and destroy the environment, this can raise awareness about how to protect Mother Earth. If you encourage shops to only sell reusable bags, these small actions can lead to bigger improvements. What if our steps towards preservation motivates other countries to become more conscious? Don’t you want to be a hero and pioneer in our country?

In conclusion, I strongly believe that you should abolish single use plastic bags and bring reusable ones. As a nation, we must demolish plastic bags now before it is too late. Don’t you want to save the nation? You would have my vote of confidence if you go green!

Looking forward to hearing from you and good luck with the next election.

Yours sincerely,

Leon
