Sleep Apps

Restless, you toss and turn all night like a dog bitten by ticks, praying for a good night’s sleep. You open up a sleep app praying that it will be the miracle to your insomnia but it just regurgitates useless instructions for you to open your mind and relax. You try over and over but nothing works leaving you lifeless like a zombie. The stress and the fury overtakes you again as you contemplate what a struggle the next day will be.

Firstly, research demonstrates sleeping apps are ineffective in alleviating sleeping problems, with 90% of users reporting no beneficial impacts. The mind is hard to be conditioned by technology, and a few lines will not penetrate nor sooth the complex mind. Moreover, like many other users, I experienced inaccurate sleep tracking overestimating both the quality and duration of my sleep.

Furthermore, sleep apps can also induce anxiety simply adding more tests and assignments to your day. There is increased pressure for you to adhere to a new routine and habit, on top of your mind trying too hard to get a well balanced sleep. For example, like an alarm, sleep apps recommend an exact timeframe to sleep which doesn’t necessarily match your level of drowsiness or fatigue. The strict discipline exacerbates sleeping problems when they force your active body in bed too early. In other cases, sleeping apps render guilt when you fail to be in bed on time.

Finally, sleep apps are simply a waste of storage space and mobile data. When you are a restless zombie, concentrating on the sleep app is near impossible, when other games for instant gratification are a click away. You are more likely to reach for the more entertaining apps and extend your screen time, as well as your exposure to blue light. This suggests the sleep apps may not cure insomnia, but may exacerbate already irregular sleeping patterns.

In conclusion, it is pointless and preposterous to have sleep apps. Sleep apps are ineffective at alleviating insomnia. In fact, sleep apps may actually induce anxiety, thus becoming a waste of storage space and mobile data.
