The Imaginary Bridge

Social media is like an imaginary bridge. The closer you think it brings you, the further it pulls you apart. In today’s day and age, social media is slowly taking over our daily lives as the average screen time is 2 - 3 hours a day. It is intended to bridge gaps and build networks across countries. Yet, more people than ever are glued to their phones, mindlessly scrolling through entertaining content.

Although each person on social media gains new connections on everyday, there are fewer real interactions than ever. When was the last time we showed real empathy and care to one another instead of sending an emoji? We still need social media but we need to start limiting our usage because the ones around us matter more. Ironically, we are on social media but we become less social with each other. More people care about influencer drama rather than what is happening around them. We miss out on the opportunity to learn or interact with others around us.

Social media has the capacity to communicate informations and issues instantly to raise awareness. Yet, many users see it as a mere entertainment to distract themselves from real issues. In the kaleidoscopic colours of social media, we ignore what's happening around us. Barely anyone talks about the environment or the wildlife even though they are crucial for human survival. Yet, thousands are following ridiculous trends. Why have we become glued to our phones? Phones ruin the way we think, speak and see the world. Instead of being physically present and being proactive to fight for important causes, we waste time on this imaginary bridge.

Let’s reduce our screen time and be more present with the ones around us. We can still use them to call our loved ones and search up information. However, let’s spend more time in real life in bridging the gaps between us, than living on the imaginary and distorted bridge with social media influencers.
